Background:
Special Prosecutor Mueller has quietly been continuing his investigation into the connections between the Trump campaign, the President, and Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Today, two high level Trump campaign aides have been indicted, including former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and his long-time junior partner Rick Gates. However, the President has been using all means at his disposal to threaten the investigation and intimidate Mueller. There are now bipartisan bills introduced into the House and Senate to protect the investigation. The bills specify that only the Attorney General may authorize removal of the special prosecutor (or the next highest Justice Department official if the Attorney General has recused himself). It also lays out strict criteria for removal from office, such as misconduct, dereliction of duty, or incapacity.

Senators can co-sponsor legislation to protect against a Mueller firing: S. 1735 led by Senators Graham and Booker, and S. 1741 led by Senators Coons and Tillis. Representatives in the House can co-sponsor H.R. 3771, led by Representatives Jones and Conyers.

1) Let’s start calling Congressman Smith’s office in D.C. at 202-225-3765 around 10:00AM

Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of Rep. Smith’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles government ethics?

I am calling to ask Congressman Smith to cosponsor the bipartisan bill H.R. 3771, the Special Counsel Integrity Act. Special Prosecutor Mueller is attempting to investigate possible collaboration between the Trump campaign and Russia to swing the 2016 election, and he is making progress as seen today with the indictments of two high level Trump campaign aides. However he is facing a constant threat of interference by the president, including dismissal, as happened with James Comey. This bill would protect him from being fired without evidence of wrongdoing. I feel it is of the utmost importance that the president be prevented from shutting down the investigation for reasons of self-interest. I would like the Congressman to cosponsor the bill, and speak out and tell the President that firing Mueller would be a red line he must not cross. Thank you.

2) Let’s start calling our Senators (Booker D.C. 202-224-3224, Newark 973-639-8700; Menendez D.C. 202-224-4744, Newark 973-645-3030) around 10:00AM

Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of the Senator’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles government ethics?

For Menendez:  I’m calling because I want Congress to assert its power now to prevent Trump from firing Special Prosecutor Mueller. Mueller’s investigation is making progress as seen today with the indictments of two high level Trump campaign aides. I want the Senator show his support for protecting Mueller and the investigation by cosponsoring either of the bipartisan bills which have been introduced to prevent a Mueller firing; S. 1735 or S. 1741. I feel it is of the utmost importance that the president be prevented from shutting down the investigation for reasons of self-interest. Please ask the Senator to do everything in his power to pass this legislation, and speak out and tell the President that firing Mueller would be a red line he must not cross.

For Booker:  I’m calling because I want Congress to assert its power now to prevent Trump from firing Special Counsel Mueller. Mueller’s investigation is making progress as seen today with the indictments of two high level Trump campaign aides. I appreciate that Senator Booker has cosponsored S. 1735, legislation to protect against a Mueller firing. Please ask the Senator to do everything in his power to pass this legislation, and continue to speak out and tell the President that firing Mueller would be a red line he must not cross.
