Background 1
The House Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice will hold a hearing this Wednesday, November 1 on the “Heartbeat Protection Act of 2017.” This bill is a draconian, anti-choice piece of legislation that would make it a federal crime for a doctor to perform an abortion on any woman whose fetus has a detectable heartbeat (which is at 6 weeks, well before many women even realize they are pregnant). The sole exception to the ban is for an abortion which is medically necessary to save the life of the woman—ignoring a woman’s psychological state, even in instances of rape or incest.

1) Let’s start calling Congressman Smith’s office in D.C. at 202-225-3765 around 10:00AM

Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of Rep. Smith’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles healthcare?

I’m calling to ask Rep. Smith to publicly oppose and vote no on H.R. 490, the Heartbeat Protection Act. This bill is an unacceptable and extreme effort to criminalize women’s reproductive health. The Heartbeat Bill blocks access to safe abortions before most women even know they’re pregnant. It is a vicious attack on the rights of women and families, and unconstitutional due to Roe v. Wade. We must maintain access to safe and affordable abortions for all women in NJ. Thank you.

Background 2
Vote scheduled today:  The Trump administration’s nomination of Amy Coney Barrett for a lifetime position on the US Court of Appeals poses a grave threat to our system of justice, specifically for reproductive rights. Barrett believes that a judge does not need to adhere to precedent if they personally believe the case was wrongly decided, including case decisions in opposition to their religious beliefs. Barrett has a demonstrated track record of hostility towards reproductive rights and the landmark judicial case of Roe v Wade, stating that abortion is “always immoral” and that the legal precedence of Roe v Wade was fair to challenge. Her nomination not only fulfills Trump’s campaign promises to nominate anti-choice candidates, but also continues the dangerous packing of our court system with hyperpartisan judges with lifetime appointments.

2) Let’s start calling our Senators (Booker D.C. 202-224-3224, Newark 973-639-8700; Menendez D.C. 202-224-4744, Newark 973-645-3030) around 10:00AM

Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of the Senator’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles judicial nominees?

I’m calling today to ask the Senator to vote against the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. This nominee has a disturbing track record of prioritizing her personal religious views over legal precedent and would clearly not be able to serve as a fair, impartial judge. Barrett’s track record of hostility towards reproductive rights and the landmark judicial case of Roe v Wade is a threat to women’s reproductive autonomy. I will appreciate a strong no vote from the Senator on this anti-choice, hyperpartisan nominee. Thank you.
