PASS A CLEAN DREAM ACT!

Notes:
The House and Senate are both on recess this week. After today, we will put our calls on hiatus for the holiday. Happy Thanksgiving Indivisible family!

Help stop Trump’s Tax Scam:  Use Indivisible’s peer to peer calling tool to make calls to someone in a key red state to urge them to call their MoCs to say no to the tax scam!

Background:
In September, Trump rescinded DACA, threatening over 800,000 undocumented young people with deportation. The declaration gave Congress until March of 2018 to pass a legislative fix or equivalent to DACA, or else those currently protected would face rapid deportation. Despite the momentum building on both sides of the aisle to swiftly pass the DREAM Act, Trump introduced a list of expensive and punitive demands that must be coupled to approval of the DREAM Act or any similar DACA protection. This includes full funding for his campaign-promised border wall, hiring of 10,000 more immigration agents, expedited deportations of asylum seekers, and withholding of federal funding from sanctuary cities.

Let’s ask our MoC to pledge that if Congress hasn’t passed the DREAM Act by Dec. 8th—when funding for the government expires—then they will insist on it being a part of the December spending bill. The pledge is that they will commit to voting against the Dec. “continuing resolution” unless it contains a clean (free of any other immigration policy) DREAM Act.

1) Let’s start calling Congressman Smith’s office in D.C. at 202-225-3765 around 10:00AM

Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of Rep. Smith’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles immigration?

I’m calling to express my support for the DREAM Act, H.R. 3440, and the thousands of Dreamers who are at risk if DACA is reversed. I urge Rep. Smith to cosponsor a clean DREAM Act and reject Trump’s demands to include funding for a border wall, increased deportation forces, or any measures that would endanger immigrant families to the bill. It is unfair and immoral to use the lives of hundreds of thousands of young DACA recipients as bargaining chips to score political gains.

Moreover, I want Rep. Smith to ensure that a clean DREAM Act comes to a vote as soon as possible, including pledging that if Congress hasn’t passed the DREAM Act by Dec. 8th, when funding for the government runs out, then they will insist on it being a part of the December spending bill by voting against the Dec. “continuing resolution” unless it contains a clean DREAM Act.

2) Let’s start calling our Senators (Booker D.C. 202-224-3224, Newark 973-639-8700; Menendez D.C. 202-224-4744, Newark 973-645-3030) around 10:00AM…

Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of the Senator’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles immigration?

I’m calling to express my support for the DREAM Act, S. 1615, and the thousands of Dreamers who are at risk if DACA is reversed. Please thank the Senator for standing up for Dreamers. I urge the Senator to cosponsor a clean DREAM Act and continue to publicly oppose Trump’s demands to include funding for a border wall, increased deportation forces, or any measures that would endanger immigrant families to the bill.

Moreover, I want the Senator to ensure that a clean DREAM Act comes to a vote as soon as possible, including pledging that if Congress hasn’t passed the DREAM Act by Dec. 8th, when funding for the government runs out, then they will insist on it being a part of the December spending bill by voting against the Dec. “continuing resolution” unless it contains a clean DREAM Act.
