Note: Indivisible NJ4 member meeting on Wed. Dec. 13, 7-9 PM at the Beach Haus in Belmar. Please join to continue our planning to challenge Smith!
The Tax Scam bill is a travesty. It gives massive tax cuts to corporations and the rich, adds $1.4 trillion to the deficit (which Republicans will use to demand cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security in 2018), will leave 13 million people without health insurance, and so much more. The House has voted to “go to conference” where they’ll try to merge the Senate and House versions of the Tax Scam bills together. Conference could last up to two weeks… allowing us to keep up the pressure. Congressman Smith has stated he is opposed to the bill, let’s hold him to that!
1) Let’s start calling Congressman Smith’s office in D.C. at 202-225-3765 around 10:00AM…
Caller: I am a constituent of Rep. Smith’s; may I please speak with the staffer who handles budgetary concerns?
I am calling with my strong opposition to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, H.R. 1, which benefits the ultra-wealthy and corporations while providing minimal benefits to most middle class households. The Senate version of the bill was made even more detrimental by including repeal of the ACA’s individual mandate, which will result in millions losing coverage and increased premiums. I appreciate Rep. Smith’s previous vote against this harmful tax bill and his statement that he is currently opposed to the bill. I urge Rep. Smith to remain a firm no vote against the bill in any form if it benefits the wealthiest 1% at the expense of the middle class. I also want to see Rep. Smith to do more; will he use his position as a Senior Member of Congress to speak publicly against the bill and pressure his fellow Republican MOC to vote no and defeat the bill? Thank you.
Trump has threatened over 800,000 undocumented young people with deportation by rescinding DACA and giving Congress until March of 2018 to pass a legislative fix. 75% of Republicans and 2/3 of Trump supporters support letting DREAMers stay. With this massive public support for a legislative fix, our Democratic Senators should insist on passage of the DREAM Act before the end of the year.
The December continuing resolution (or “CR”) is the last spending bill of the year and it is the last opportunity for the DREAM Act this year. Democrats have leverage here since Republicans need Democrats to help them pass a spending bill (60 votes are required in the Senate). But on Thursday Dec. 7, Congress kicked the can down the road by passing a short term two-week spending bill, to avoid a government shutdown a day ahead of the Dec. 8 deadline. Despite national pressure for Dems to vote against the CR unless it included a clean DREAM Act, only several Democratic Senators voted no yesterday when the DREAM Act was not included in the two-week spending bill. Senator Booker was among the no votes, but Senator Menendez was not.
We now want our Senators to take the Dreamer pledge and commit to only vote for the next Dec. 22 continuing resolution (“CR”) if it has the Dream Act included. A vote on a continuing resolution without the Dream Act is a vote to deport Dreamers. Important: we are NOT calling for a shutdown. We’re asking that Dems REFUSE to help Republicans pass a spending bill unless it contains a clean DREAM Act.
2)Let’s start calling our Senators (Booker D.C. 202-224-3224, Newark 973-639-8700; Menendez D.C. 202-224-4744, Newark 973-645-3030) around 10:00AM…
Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of the Senator’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles immigration?
I’m calling to express my support for the DREAM Act, S. 1615, and the thousands of Dreamers who are at risk if DACA is reversed. I thank the Senator for standing up for Dreamers and urge him to continue to publicly oppose Trump’s demands to include funding for a border wall, increased deportation forces, or any measures that would endanger immigrant families to the bill.
I am disappointed that Sen. Menendez voted to kick the can down the road for Dreamers by passing a 2 week continuing resolution that does not include the Dream Act. Every day that we don’t pass the Dream Act, 122 Dreamers lose their protections and are exposed to the Trump deportation machine. Democrats have been promising for months that they would use this opportunity to protect Dreamers. Will Sen. Menendez take the Dreamer Pledge and commit to voting for the continuing resolution on December 22 only if it includes the Dream Act? If not, why not?
Please thank the Senator for taking the Dreamer pledge and voting against the 2 week short term spending bill that did not include the DREAM Act. The Senator did the right thing and showed leadership when most of his colleagues did not. Please ask the Senator to remain firm in insisting that the DREAM Act is included in the next Dec. 22 continuing resolution.
