2) Trump Tax Scam Rally this Wed. 12/20 at 4pm- Rep. Smith’s Freehold Office – 112 Village Center Drive Freehold, N.J. Please share and encourage family & friends to attend!
Background 1
Late last week, Republicans announced their “conference report” of the tax bills was finalized and are rushing to a final vote on the Trump Tax Scam bill before Senator-elect Doug Jones is seated. The House will vote today, with the Senate quickly behind. This bill would leave 13 million more people uninsured, raise taxes on 83 million families, and add $1.4 trillion to the deficit, which will force deep cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and more down the road. This is all in order to give massive tax cuts to millionaires, corporations, and members of Congress themselves. This is a subversion of Democracy and we will hold them accountable! Congressman Smith has indicated he is opposed to the bill, let’s hold him to that!
1a) Let’s start calling Congressman Smith’s office in D.C. at 202-225-3765 around 10:00AM…
Caller:  I am a constituent of Rep. Smith’s; may I please speak with the staffer who handles budgetary concerns?
I am calling with my strong opposition to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, H.R. 1. The bill is a scam that will give massive cuts to the wealthy and corporations, paid for by repealing the ACA’s individual mandate which will leave hundreds of thousands of people in NJ uninsured, raise premiums, and raise taxes on middle-class families. I appreciate Rep. Smith’s previous vote against this harmful tax bill and his statement that he is currently opposed to the bill. I urge Rep. Smith to remain a firm no vote against the bill in any form if it benefits the wealthiest 1% at the expense of the middle class. I also want to see Rep. Smith to do more; will he use his position as a Senior Member of Congress to speak publicly against the bill and pressure his fellow Republican MOC to vote no and defeat the bill? Thank you.

I want the Senator to continue to call for Senate Leader McConnell to postpone the vote, and to urge Republican Senators to refuse to cast a final vote until Doug Jones is seated in the Senate. The Senate should return to regular order to create a tax plan that works for all Americans. Thank you.

Background 2
Trump has threatened over 800,000 undocumented young people with deportation by rescinding DACA and giving Congress until March of 2018 to pass a legislative fix. 75% of Republicans and 2/3 of Trump supporters support letting DREAMers stay. With this massive public support for a legislative fix, our Democratic Senators should insist on passage of the DREAM Act before the end of the year.
The December continuing resolution (or “CR”) is the last spending bill of the year and it is the last opportunity for the DREAM Act this year. Democrats have leverage here since Republicans need Democrats to help them pass a spending bill (60 votes are required in the Senate). But on Thursday Dec. 7, Congress kicked the can down the road by passing a short term two-week spending bill, to avoid a government shutdown a day ahead of the Dec. 8 deadline. Despite national pressure for Dems to vote against the CR unless it included a clean DREAM Act, only several Democratic Senators voted no when the DREAM Act was not included in the two-week spending bill. Senator Booker was among the no votes, but Senator Menendez was not.
We now want our Senators to take the Dreamer pledge and commit to only vote for the next Dec. 22 continuing resolution (“CR”) if it has the DREAM Act included. A vote on a continuing resolution without the Dream Act is a vote to deport Dreamers. Important: we are NOT calling for a shutdown. We’re asking that Dems REFUSE to help Republicans pass a spending bill unless it contains a clean DREAM Act.

Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of the Senator’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles immigration?
I’m calling to express my support for the DREAM Act, S. 1615, and the thousands of Dreamers who are at risk if DACA is reversed. I urge the Senator to continue to publicly oppose Trump’s demands to include funding for a border wall, increased deportation forces, or any measures that would endanger immigrant families to the bill.
For Menendez:
However, I am disappointed that Sen. Menendez voted to kick the can down the road for Dreamers by passing a 2 week continuing resolution that does not include the DREAM Act. Democrats have been promising for months that they would use this opportunity to protect Dreamers. A vote on a continuing resolution without the DREAM Act is a vote to deport Dreamers. I am NOT advocating for a government shutdown. I’m asking that Sen. Menendez and the Dems REFUSE to help Republicans pass a spending bill unless it contains a clean DREAM Act. Will Sen. Menendez make a public statement taking the Dreamer Pledge and commit to voting for the continuing resolution on December 22 only if it includes the DREAM Act? If not, why not?
For Booker:
Please thank the Senator for taking the Dreamer pledge and voting against the 2 week short term spending bill that did not include the DREAM Act. The Senator did the right thing and showed leadership when most of his colleagues did not. Please ask the Senator to remain firm in insisting that the DREAM Act is included in the next Dec. 22 continuing resolution.
