Trump Tax Scam Rally today, Wed. 12/20 at 4pm- Rep. Smith’s Freehold Office – 112 Village Center Drive Freehold, N.J. Please share!
We have reached the end of year legislative jam where Republicans are ramming through an immoral tax bill while leaving children’s health insurance on life support, immigrant youth at risk of being deported, and even more. Suggestions for calls are below. Thank you to everyone for your persistence!
Republicans rushed to a final vote on the Trump Tax Scam bill before seating Senator-elect Doug Jones. After the bill cleared the House yesterday, the Senate Parliamentarian ruled that 3 provisions in the bill violate the Senate Byrd Rule, forcing changes to the bill prior to the Senate vote. Per this ruling, the House is required to vote again today on the final version.
This bill would leave 13 million more people uninsured, raise taxes on 83 million families, and add $1.4 trillion to the deficit, which will force deep cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and more down the road. This is all in order to give massive tax cuts to millionaires, corporations, and members of Congress themselves. This is a subversion of Democracy and we will hold them accountable! Congressman Smith voted no, let’s hold him to that!
1a) Let’s start calling Congressman Smith’s office in D.C. at 202-225-3765 around 10:00AM…
Caller: I am a constituent of Rep. Smith’s; may I please speak with the staffer who handles budgetary concerns?
I am calling with my strong opposition to the Republican tax bill, H.R. 1. The bill is a scam that will give massive cuts to the wealthy and corporations, paid for by repealing the ACA’s individual mandate which will leave hundreds of thousands of people in NJ uninsured, raise premiums, and raise taxes on middle-class families. It is also outrageous that members of Congress themselves will benefit from this bill and the American people have no way of knowing to what degree the President himself will benefit without seeing his tax returns. I thank Rep. Smith for voting no yesterday and urge him to remain a firm no vote. But I also want to see Rep. Smith to do more; will he use his position as a Senior Member of Congress to speak publicly against the bill and pressure his fellow Republican MOC to vote no and defeat the bill? Congress should return to regular order to create a tax plan that works for all Americans. Thank you.
Trump has threatened over 800,000 undocumented young people with deportation by rescinding DACA and giving Congress until March of 2018 to pass a legislative fix. With massive public support for a legislative fix, our Democratic Senators should insist on passage of the DREAM Act before the end of the year. But despite national pressure for Dems to vote against the Dec. 7th short term two-week spending bill unless it included a clean DREAM Act, only several Democratic Senators voted no when the DREAM Act was not included. Senator Booker was among the no votes, but Senator Menendez was not. We now want our Senators to take the Dreamer pledge and commit to only vote for the next Dec. 22 continuing resolution (“CR”) if it has the DREAM Act included. A vote on a continuing resolution without the Dream Act is a vote to deport Dreamers. Important: we are NOT calling for a shutdown. We’re asking that Dems REFUSE to help Republicans pass a spending bill unless it contains a clean DREAM Act.
2) Let’s start calling our Senators (Booker D.C. 202-224-3224, Newark 973-639-8700; Menendez D.C. 202-224-4744, Newark 973-645-3030) around 10:00AM…
Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of the Senator’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles immigration?
I’m calling to express my support for the DREAM Act, S. 1615, and the thousands of Dreamers who are at risk if DACA is reversed. I urge the Senator to continue to publicly oppose Trump’s demands to include funding for a border wall, increased deportation forces, or any measures that would endanger immigrant families to the bill.
However, I am disappointed that Sen. Menendez voted to kick the can down the road for Dreamers by passing a 2 week continuing resolution that does not include the DREAM Act. A vote on a continuing resolution without the DREAM Act is a vote to deport Dreamers. I am NOT advocating for a government shutdown. I’m asking that Sen. Menendez and the Dems REFUSE to help Republicans pass a spending bill unless it contains a clean DREAM Act. Will Sen. Menendez make a public statement taking the Dreamer Pledge and commit to voting for the continuing resolution on December 22 only if it includes the DREAM Act? If not, why not?
Please thank the Senator for taking the Dreamer pledge and voting against the 2 week short term spending bill that did not include the DREAM Act. The Senator did the right thing and showed leadership when most of his colleagues did not. Please ask the Senator to uphold the Dreamer Pledge and only vote for the continuing resolution on December 22 if it includes the DREAM Act. A vote on a continuing resolution without the DREAM Act is a vote to deport Dreamers. Thank you.
Federal funding ran out on Sept. 30 for both CHIP, which annually insures nearly 9 million children and pregnant women whose families’ incomes are too high to qualify for Medicaid, and Community Health Centers, which are the main source of health care for more than 25 million low-income Americans regardless of their ability to pay, and Medicaid beneficiaries. House Republicans have passed legislation, HR 3922, the CHAMPIONING HEALTHY KIDS Act, to renew funding for both CHIP and community health centers, but pay for the programs by large cuts to the ACA and changes to both the ACA and Medicaid that will drastically weaken the healthcare system. Let’s urge our Senators to ensure that Congress does not fund children’s healthcare at the expense of others.
3) Let’s start calling our Senators (Booker D.C. 202-224-3224, Newark 973-639-8700; Menendez D.C. 202-224-4744, Newark 973-645-3030) around 10:00AM…
Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of the Senator’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles healthcare?
I’m calling with my strong support for renewal of funding for both CHIP and Community Health Centers. Congress must immediately pass clean bipartisan reauthorization bills for both CHIP and Community Health Centers without cuts to the ACA or weakening of Medicare or Medicaid as proposed in the House’s CHAMPIONING HEALTHY KIDS Act, HR 3922. I thank the Senator for cosponsoring S. 1827, the bipartisan KIDS Act. I want the Senator to oppose the House-passed funding bill, HR 3922 and ensure that Congress does not harm the American healthcare system by funding children’s healthcare at the expense of others.
