CALL TOPIC: Congress must restrict Trump’s nuclear launch authority; cosponsor the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act and the No Unconstitutional Strike Against North Korea Act.
CALL SCRIPT:
1) Let’s call Congressman Smith’s office in D.C. at 202-225-3765
Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of Rep. Smith’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles military affairs?
I’m calling because I’m very concerned about the current situation with Trump’s dangerous warmongering rhetoric towards North Korea. It’s very important for Congress to weigh in here as the body that is supposed to be determining when and where we go to war, therefore I’d like Rep. Smith to co-sponsor 2 pieces of legislation that would restrict the President’s ability to launch a nuclear strike without congressional authorization:
H.R. 669, the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act of 2017. (This legislation would make explicit that Trump cannot launch a nuclear strike absent a declaration of war from Congress.)
H.R. 4140, the No Unconstitutional Strike Against North Korea Act of 2017. (This bill seeks to prevent Trump from launching any sort of strike at North Korea without congressional authorization.)
In addition, I ask Rep. Smith to clearly state on the record that Trump’s rhetoric is making the situation worse, and urge de-escalation and diplomatic solutions to this crisis. Thank you.
2) Let’s call our Senators (Booker D.C. 202-224-3224, Newark 973-639-8700; Menendez D.C. 202-224-4744, Newark 973-645-3030)…
Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of the Senator’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles military affairs?
I’m calling because I’m very concerned about the current situation with Trump’s dangerous warmongering rhetoric towards North Korea. It’s very important for Congress to weigh in here as the body that is supposed to be determining when and where we go to war, therefore I’d like the Senator to co-sponsor 2 pieces of legislation that would restrict the President’s ability to launch a nuclear strike without congressional authorization:
S. 200, the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act of 2017. (This legislation would make explicit that Trump cannot launch a nuclear strike absent a declaration of war from Congress.)
S. 2016, the No Unconstitutional Strike Against North Korea Act of 2017. (This bill seeks to prevent Trump from launching any sort of strike at North Korea without congressional authorization.)
In addition, I ask the Senator to clearly state on the record that Trump’s rhetoric is making the situation worse, and urge de-escalation and diplomatic solutions to this crisis. Thank you.
If you have a personal story to relate to this issue, and are comfortable sharing it, please do – our elected officials want to hear how their policies affect our lives!
