Stop the #TrumpShutdown: Put Dreams in the Budget!

NOTES:
1) Register in the link below for our three Meet the Candidate Night series of discussions. The first event is this Thurs. Jan. 25 with Jim Keady. Registration is required but free.
CALL TOPIC: Congress must assert itself as a co-equal branch of government and pass a bill that provides relief for Dreamers and funds our government. The Senate requires at least eight Democratic senators to vote yes to pass a budget, giving Democrats crucial leverage. That means we have another opportunity to stand up for the most vulnerable among us: immigrants at risk of deportation, children, and communities rebuilding after natural disasters.
CALL SCRIPT:
1) Let’s call Congressman Smith’s office in D.C. at 202-225-3765…
Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of Rep. Smith’s ; may I speak with the staffer who handles Budgetary issues?
I am disappointed and ashamed that Rep. Smith voted to cover for Trump’s racist beliefs and policies by voting to fund the government without protecting Dreamers. If Rep. Smith wants to demonstrate that he doesn’t have the same racist ideas as Donald Trump, he needs to vote to protect Dreamers as part of any deal to reopen the government. I strongly urge Rep. Smith to support a clean DREAM Act as a part of any funding bill (the RAC Act that Rep. Smith supports is too restrictive and does not have the same broad bipartisan support as the DREAM Act). Funding for CHIP, Community Health Centers, opioid treatment, and disaster relief for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands should also be included, and funding for Trump’s atrocious border wall should be removed. Thank you.
2)Let’s call our Senators (Booker D.C. 202-224-3224, Newark 973-639-8700; Menendez D.C. 202-224-4744, Newark 973-645-3030)…
Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of the Senator’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles Budgetary issues?
I wanted to thank the Senator for voting against the CR that didn’t include the DREAM Act. Dreamers deserve MoCs like the Senator who will stand with them and use their power to protect them from the Trump deportation machine. I urge the Senator to only vote to reopen the government when there is a bipartisan deal to protect Dreamers from deportation. The Republicans shut down the government because Donald Trump’s racism made it impossible to negotiate—Congress shouldn’t reward him by backing down now. Funding for CHIP, Community Health Centers, opioid treatment, and disaster relief for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands should also be included, and funding for Trump’s atrocious border wall should be removed. Thank you.
If you have a personal story to relate to this issue, and are comfortable sharing it, please do – our elected officials want to hear how their policies affect our lives!
