CALL TOPIC 1: The Senate has announced a deal on budget caps thus increasing investments in domestic programs (see Source for domestic program list) and the military by roughly $300 billion over 2 years.  A short term spending bill will be passed while the appropriations are ironed out. The debt ceiling may also be raised. DACA and immigration will be discussed on the floor next week.

However in the House, the spending hike alarms conservatives and the lack of immigration reform alarms progressives. Pelosi and some Democrats will not vote for the new deal without assurance of a vote on DACA from Speaker Ryan.

Meanwhile DACA and immigration reform is stuck with moderate proposals that would pass in Congress but the White House won’t support vs. conservative trump backed proposals that would never get through the Senate.

1) Let’s call Congressman Smith’s office in D.C. at 202-225-3765

Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of Rep. Smith’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles Budgetary issues?

I wanted to tell the Congressman to demand a resolution of the DACA issue and immigration overall. The Congressman should stand with those calling on Speaker Ryan to bring DACA and immigration to the floor as McConnell has done in the Senate. I urge the Congressman to vote NO on the budget unless the immigration issue is discussed and moved forward. Thank you.

2)Let’s call our Senators (Booker D.C. 202-224-3224, Newark 973-639-8700; Menendez D.C. 202-224-4744, Newark 973-645-3030)…

Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of the Senator’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles Budgetary issues?

I wanted to tell the Senator to continue to demand a resolution of the DACA issue and immigration overall. With passage of the deal made concerning the budget, immigration may stall or be tabled indefinitely. I urge the Senator to ensure that does not happen. Thank you.

If you have a personal story to relate to this issue, and are comfortable sharing it, please do – our elected officials want to hear how their policies affect our lives!

CALL TOPIC 2: Vote today in the Senate Judiciary Committee, on which Senator Booker serves, on the lifetime judicial appointment for Howard Nielson who has a long record of extremism and contempt for the rule of law.

Let’s call Senator Booker D.C. 202-224-3224, Newark 973-639-8700

I urge the Senator to OPPOSE and vote NO on Trump’s nominee to the federal district court in Utah, Howard Nielson. Nielson’s extremist legal views and record of hostility to checks and balances and the rule of law make him unfit for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench. Thank you.
