Take Action

STOP TRUMP’S WAR CABINET!

CALL TOPIC
Trump has nominated Mike Pompeo (current CIA Director) as Secretary of State, and Gina Haspel to replace Pompeo as CIA Director. Mike Pompeo has espoused anti-Muslim bigotry, denied climate change, tried to destroy diplomacy with Iran, and supported torture. Gina Haspel personally helped torture detainees in a secret CIA-run prison during the Bush administration and tried to cover up the evidence.
Mike Pompeo’s confirmation hearing for Secretary of State in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee could happen as early as this Thursday. Senators Menendez and Booker both serve on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, with Menendez as the ranking Democratic member, so let’s urge them to do everything in their power to block Pompeo’s nomination from advancing this week!
CALL SCRIPT
Let’s call our Senators (Booker D.C. 202-224-3224, Newark 973-639-8700; Menendez D.C. 202-224-4744, Newark 973-645-3030)…
Caller:  I am a constituent of the Senator’s and I strongly oppose the appointments of Mike Pompeo for Secretary of State and Gina Haspel for head of the CIA. Both nominees have supported the US’s use of torture in the past, which endangers human rights and makes us less safe. I urge the Senator to vote against both nominees and do everything in his power to block their confirmations including making a public statement condemning both nominations and urging his colleagues to oppose them. Since the Senator is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, I would also like him to take a strong stance against Pompeo in his confirmation hearing this week. Thank you.

CALL TOPIC: Let’s combat the Trump administration’s irresponsible stance on climate change by advocating for a bold agenda to address the climate crisis; urge Rep. Smith to cosponsor and work to pass the Off Fossil Fuels for a Better Future Act, or “OFF Act.”
The OFF Act:
-requires 100% of electricity sold in the US to come from clean energy by 2035, with an interim benchmark of 80% by 2027
-provides funding to help individuals and communities currently employed in the fossil fuel sector to transition to other work
-places a moratorium on new fossil fuel projects
-bans the export of oil and gas
-modernizes the electric grid and moves our automobile and rail systems to 100 percent renewable energy

Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of Rep. Smith’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles environmental and energy issues?

I strongly urge Rep. Smith to cosponsor HR 3671, the Off Fossil Fuels for a Better Future Act. The OFF Act would move our country to 100% renewable energy by 2035 and provide for a just transition to a clean energy system by protecting vulnerable workers and impacted communities. This is exactly the kind of aggressive action we need to combat the climate crisis and build a 21st century energy economy that protects our health and resources. I know the Congressman has spoken out in the past in support of curbing global warming. I hope he will cosponsor this legislation and help make this a bipartisan effort. Thank you.

PROTECT MUELLER & DEMAND HEARINGS ON McCABE’s FIRING!

CALL TOPIC
Last week it was reported that Mueller subpoenaed the Trump Organization for documents related to Russia, and the developments that followed suggest that Mueller’s investigation is under attack. Between the firing of FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, Trump’s lawyer calling for the investigation to end, and Trump’s smear campaign, there’s a very real possibility Trump could soon fire Mueller, causing a constitutional crisis.
CALL SCRIPT
1) Let’s call Congressman Smith’s office in D.C. at 202-225-3765…
Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of Rep. Smith’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles government ethics?
I’m calling to express my outrage about the Trump Administration’s firing of Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe. I demand that Rep. Smith join his colleagues on both sides of the aisle and call for Judiciary Committee hearings to examine whether there was inappropriate political influence in McCabe’s termination. Attorney General Sessions should face the committee and explain DOJ’s process and whether this is an attempt to target, punish or silence those investigating Russia and the Trump campaign.
In addition, I want Rep. Smith to take the following steps to protect the Mueller investigation:
-unequivocally state that if Trump were to fire Mueller or Rosenstein, or otherwise obstruct the investigation, that would be an unacceptable red line.
-cosponsor bipartisan legislation to prevent Special Counsel Mueller from being fired; H.R. 3654 the Special Counsel Independence Protection Act, and H.R. 4669 the Special Counsel Integrity Act. Thank you.

VOTE TODAY: END U.S. SUPPORT FOR WAR CRIMES IN YEMEN!

CALL TOPIC
Today the Senate is expected to vote on S.J. Res. 54, a bipartisan resolution introduced by Senators Sanders (I-VT) and Lee (R-UT) to end U.S. participation in the Yemen civil war. If passed by both chambers of Congress, the resolution would declare the U.S. participation in the Yemen war unauthorized, and would end American support for Saudi war crimes.
*Senator Booker has cosponsored the resolution, so we need to ensure that Senator Menendez will also be a firm YES vote today.

CALL SCRIPT
1) Let’s call our Senators (Booker D.C. 202-224-3224, Newark 973-639-8700; Menendez D.C. 202-224-4744, Newark 973-645-3030)…

Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of the Senator’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles military actions?

I’m calling with my support for S.J. Res. 54, to end our unauthorized war in Yemen. Congress has never authorized this war, and evidence shows that the airstrikes the U.S. is supporting are causing a humanitarian crisis and may amount to war crimes. The chaos has allowed terror groups such as ISIS and Al Qaeda affiliates to gain more power and land.

Please ask Senator Menendez to vote YES on this resolution when it comes to the floor for a vote. Congress must exercise its constitutional power and end this unauthorized war.

Please thank Senator Booker for cosponsoring this resolution. I strongly support his YES vote to end this unauthorized war.

2) Let’s call Congressman Smith’s office in D.C. at 202-225-3765

Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of Rep. Smith’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles military actions?

I’m calling with my support for H.Con. Res. 81, to end our unauthorized war in Yemen. Congress has never authorized this war, and evidence shows that the airstrikes the U.S. is supporting are causing a humanitarian crisis and may amount to war crimes. The chaos has allowed terror groups such as ISIS and Al Qaeda affiliates to gain more power and land.

Please ask Rep. Smith to cosponsor and vote YES on this resolution when it comes to the floor for a vote. Congress must exercise its constitutional power and end this unauthorized war.
