PROTECT MUELLER!

CALL TOPIC:  Congress must assert its power now to prevent a constitutional crisis by passing legislation to prevent a Mueller firing. The two competing special counsel protection bills have been merged into one; the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act S. 2644/ H.R. 5476. The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected vote on the legislation today despite Leader McConnell’s statement that he does not intend to bring the bill up for a Senate floor vote.
CALL SCRIPT
1) Let’s call Congressman Smith’s office in D.C. at 202-225-3765…
Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of Rep. Smith’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles government ethics?
I am calling with my support for protecting the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. I am very concerned about the possibility of President Trump firing Special Counsel Mueller or otherwise impeding the investigation, such as by firing Deputy A.G. Rod Rosenstein. I strongly urge Rep. Smith to take the following steps to protect the Mueller investigation:
-unequivocally state that if Trump were to fire Mueller or Rosenstein, or otherwise obstruct the investigation, that would be an unacceptable red line.
-cosponsor bipartisan legislation to prevent Special Counsel Mueller from being fired; H.R. 5476, the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act, and make a public statement urging Speaker Ryan and Leader McConnell to bring this bill up for a vote. Thank you.
2) Let’s call our Senators (Booker D.C. 202-224-3224, Newark 973-639-8700; Menendez D.C. 202-224-4744, Newark 973-645-3030)…

For Menendez: In addition, I want the Senator to cosponsor bipartisan legislation to prevent Special Counsel Mueller from being fired; S. 2644 the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act, and make a public statement urging Leader McConnell to bring this bill up for a vote. Thank you.
For Booker who is an original sponsor of S. 2644:  Please thank the Senator for sponsoring this bill. I urge the Senator to do everything he can to move this bill forward.

NO WORK REQUIREMENTS FOR SNAP!

NOTE:  Wed, April 25, 4-5pm: Constituent Vigil at Chris Smith’s Office!

112 Village Center Dr, Freehold.

CALL TOPIC:  The current Farm Bill expires September 30th. The House Agriculture Committee has just passed the new version of the bill which includes new strict work requirements, requiring millions of people who get food aid through SNAP (The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) to either have a job or attend job training classes for 20 hours a week.

Let’s call Congressman Smith’s office in D.C. at 202-225-3765…

Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of Rep. Smith’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles agriculture and nutrition?

I’m calling to urge Rep. Smith to vote against the reauthorization of the Farm Bill if it includes any work requirements to access SNAP benefits. SNAP provides critical food assistance to working families during tough times, and helps people to reenter the workforce by providing crucial financial support while they are in between jobs. Restricting access to SNAP will only worsen poverty and hurt local economies. I ask Rep. Smith to ensure that the 2018 Farm Bill maintains food security for those who need assistance. Thank you.

NO UNAUTHORIZED SYRIAN STRIKES!

NOTES
1) Wed, April 18, 4-5pm: Constituent Vigil at Chris Smith’s Office!
CALL TOPIC: President Trump ordered joint military strikes in coordination with France and Britain to target sites associated with chemical weapons with “precision strikes” in Syria without seeking the consent of Congress or even providing information on the legal basis for this unilateral action despite repeated requests.

CALL SCRIPT
1) Let’s call Congressman Smith’s office in D.C. at 202-225-3765…

Caller: Hello, I am a constituent of Rep. Smith’s; may I speak with the staffer who handles military actions?

I’m calling to express my dismay that Trump has again launched an unauthorized and strategy-free strike in Syria. I urge Rep. Smith take action to rein in Trump’s escalation. Congress should demand that Trump come to Congress before any further strikes in Syria— and I want Rep. Smith to vote NO on any such request for further strikes, and instead urge the Administration to lead with diplomacy to help the people of Syria, and support the investigation into the attack.

In addition, Rep. Smith should denounce Trump’s bigoted Muslim and refugee bans that are harming victims of violence in Syria, and call on the Administration to immediately resettle more Syrian refugees. It is unacceptable that the U.S. has only resettled 11 Syrian refugees this year. Rep. Smith has sponsored legislation to protect victims of civil war and genocide in Iraq and Syria by providing them with resettlement priority (H.R. 390), and in the spirit of his own legislation, he should insist that we immediately give more Syrian refugees a place to flee this violence. Thank you.
